Public servants, such as teachers, firemen, healthcare providers, and sanitation workers, are essential to maintaining the efficient operation of our communities and countries.

History of UN Public Service Day

By resolution 57/277, the UN General Assembly formally created the United Nations Public Service Day on December 20, 2002. Recognizing public service’s critical role in development, the UN created this day to:

  • Honor the importance of and impact that public service has on communities.
  • Highlight the roles played by government employees in the advancement of the country and the world.
  • Recognize the difficulties that public employees face on a daily basis.
  • Encourage youth to think about pursuing professions in public service.

In 2003, the United Nations launched the UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) program to further underscore the importance of this day. This campaign honors innovation and quality in the provision of public services globally. Additionally, every year, the UN DESA (Department of Economic and Social Affairs) hosts a Public Service Forum, working in partnership with a host nation. This international gathering’s workshops, prize presentations, and high-level conversations are all aimed at increasing public governance capability.

The celebration’s topic for this year is “Fostering Innovation amid Global Challenges: a Public Sector Perspective.” This subject highlights how important it is for public service providers to come up with innovative solutions to the complex problems that face our society today.

The Importance of Innovation in Public Service

Innovation is becoming a need for public service rather than a luxury in a world that is changing quickly. It is always expected of public employees to come up with innovative and efficient methods to manage resources, provide services, and adapt to the changing requirements of their communities. A timely reminder that innovation is essential to creating a more affluent, just, and sustainable future for all is provided by UN Public Service Day.

The core of our society is made up of public servants. They commit their life, frequently in the face of difficult circumstances, to serving the public good. On UN Public Service Day, we honor their outstanding efforts and encourage the next generation to work in public service. Public workers may continue on change the world for the better by encouraging collaborative thinking and innovation.
