Every year on June 21, International Yoga Day is a day set over for spreading knowledge of the health, psychological, and spiritual advantages of yoga. Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the global event is themed “Yoga for Self and Society.” The major ceremony will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, on the scenic Dal Lake banks.
The United Nations announced December 11, 2014, to be International Yoga Day. 175 member states supported the concept, which was promoted by India and gained overwhelming approval. During his address at the 69th UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi originally put forward the idea, highlighting yoga as a comprehensive approach to health and well-being and an invaluable gift from old Indian heritage.
With events scheduled all throughout the world, this year’s celebration is expected to be historic. The highlight will be the Prime Minister Narendra Modi event in Srinagar, where 3,000–4,000 people are expected to attend a large-scale yoga class. To promote the practice of yoga, there will be interactive sessions, seminars, and yoga demonstrations during the celebrations.
