Telangana Formation Day is June 2nd, and this year is unique as it is the tenth anniversary of the formation of the country’s youngest state, which was formed by separating Andhra Pradesh. In celebration of the path that led to the creation of Telangana, events were organized all around the state. The Congress administration, which was crucial in this process, proudly celebrated the occasion. This article covers the historical background and key turning points that resulted in the formation of Telangana.

Princely State of Hyderabad and Post-Independence Era

Early History

The modern state of Telangana was part of the Hyderabad princely state before to Indian independence. Hyderabad was one of the biggest, richest, and most diversified princely republics in India during the rule of Nizam Osman Ali Khan. There was a lot of instability in Telangana in 1945 when a communist-backed revolt against the jagirdari (land revenue) system broke out.

Independence Developments

The Nizam of Hyderabad refused to accept India after its independence in 1947, which led to the Indian military’s involvement in 1948, known as “Operation Polo.” Hyderabad was made a Part-B state of India on January 26, 1951, and had an elected chief minister and the Nizam serving as the Rajpramukh.

Linguistic Reorganisation and the Formation of Andhra Pradesh

Initial Reorganisation

The need for linguistic states became more pressing in the 1950s. Andhra State was established in 1953 from parts of Madras State as a result of Potti Sriramalu’s fast until death in 1952. Although the States Reorganisation Committee (SRC) suggested that Telangana be independent until 1961, Telangana and Andhra were combined to form Andhra Pradesh, which has Hyderabad as its capital, by the States Reorganisation Act of 1956.

The Struggle for Telangana and its Ultimate Creation

Early Protests and Legal Battles

As early as 1952, there were protests in Telangana against the implementation of the Mulki Rules, which gave Telangana citizens preference for government positions. The Telangana Praja Samiti was founded in 1969 as a result of the largest-ever rallies, which called for statehood.

The Revival of the Movement

In 2001, K Chandrasekar Rao (KCR) revived the Telangana cause by forming the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s sudden demise in 2009 created a political window of opportunity that resulted in KCR’s fast-unto-death and the Congress Party’s decision to form Telangana.

Formation of Telangana

After long discussions, Hyderabad was used for ten years as the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana before Telangana became a state in 2014. At the Parade Grounds, celebrations were organized to commemorate ten years of statehood. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy introduced a new state song and saluted those who gave their lives in defense of the cause.
