India-Mongolia Launch 'Nomadic Elephant' Exercise in Meghalaya

Overview of ‘Nomadic Elephant’ Exercise

In Umroi, Meghalaya, the two-week Joint Military Exercise ‘Nomadic Elephant’ between Mongolia and India began on Wednesday. The purpose of this exercise is to improve both countries’ military capacity to carry out sub-conventional counterinsurgency operations in fulfillment of UN orders.

Indian Contingent Participant

Represented by people from several services as well as a 45-person team from the Sikkim Scouts Battalion.

The Contingent of Mongolia

Represented by members of the Mongolian Army’s 150 Quick Reaction Force Battalion.

Ceremony of Opening

Notable dignitaries in attendance at the opening ceremony included:

  • Dambajavyn Ganbold, the Mongolian ambassador to India, and Major General Prasanna Joshi, the Indian Army’s general officer commanding the 51st Sub Area

The exercise’s goals

‘Nomadic Elephant’s 16th edition is centered around:

  • Enhancing the armed forces’ capacity to fight revolts.
  • Performing activities in mountainous and semi-urban areas.
  • Sharing best practices for coordinated operations’ strategies, methods, and procedures.
  • Promoting communication, goodwill, and unity between the two militaries.
  • Strengthening India-Mongolia defense cooperation and bilateral ties.

Key Activities and Tactical Drills

During the exercise, participants will engage in:

  • Reaction to acts of terrorism.
  • Establishment of a joint command post and an intelligence and surveillance center.
  • Safeguarding landing areas and helipads.
  • Insertion and extraction in small teams.
  • Unique heliborne operations.
  • Search and cordon procedures.
  • Using drones and counter-drone technology.

An annual training session called “Nomadic Elephant” is simultaneously held in Mongolia and India. The most recent version took place in July 2023 in Mongolia. The bilateral ties between India and Mongolia are strengthened, and the degree of defense cooperation is raised in large part by this exercise.
