The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is celebrating a significant achievement! “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know,” a short film created by four of its pupils, has been selected for the difficult La Cinef section of the highly anticipated 77th Cannes Film Festival. This differentiated selection positions the film with 17 other globally short films competing for a distinction at the renowned event.

A Story of Chaos and Community

Chidanand S. Naik’s “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know” focuses on the unexpected consequences of a reportedly simple deed. The film tells the story of an old woman who breaks the peace in her village by taking away its rooster. This apparently small robbery devastates the town, driving the locals to seek a remedy through a vague prediction. The story unfolds as the woman’s family deals with the effects of her actions, which could lead to her her exile.

Bringing the Film to Life

The success of “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know” is a credit to the collaborative efforts of the brilliant FTII students who produced it. Suraj Thakur’s talented cinematography catches the heart of the drama, while Manoj V’s editing skills create a smooth flow. The film’s soundtrack is brought to life by Abhishek Kadam’s connecting music score.

Celebrating Achievement and Anticipation

The FTII went to social media to express its pride in the students’ achievements, spreading the word throughout the world. The film’s selection at Cannes is a huge accomplishment for these young filmmakers and the FTII as a whole.

With the competition planned for May 23rd at the Bunuel Theatre, “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know” is gearing up to vie for one of the coveted La Cinef awards. The film joins pitches from a variety of nations, including Lebanon, China, Greece, and the United States.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from May 14th to 25th, providing a showcase of extraordinary cinematic talent from every corner of the world. The focus will be on “Sunflowers Were the First Ones.”
