NIMHANS Wins 2024 WHO Nelson Mandela Award

The WHO’s 2024 Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion has been given to Bengaluru’s National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS). This prestigious honor was given to NIMHANS director Dr. Pratima Murthy on May 31, 2024, during a special ceremony held in Geneva during the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly.

WHO Awards 2024

Out of its four regions—Africa, Southeast Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Western Pacific—the WHO chooses eight winners. Every winner has greatly enhanced public health, either nationally or internationally. The following are the 2024 award winners:

  • Professor Bontle Mbongwe of Botswana and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) of India have been awarded the Nelson Mandela Award for Health Promotion.
  • The prize winner of the 2024 Ihsan Doğramacı Family Health Foundation is Dr. Jamila Taiseer Yasser Al Abri from Oman.
  • Dr. Lee Jong-Wook Public Health Memorial Award 2024: Doreen Ramogola-Masire, Botswana; 2024: Dr. Bader Al-Rawahi, Oman; Sakawa Health Prize
  • Saudi Arabia’s National Death Registry System is the recipient of the 2024 United Arab Emirates Health Foundation Prize.
  • The Honorable Sheikh Sabah Al-Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Prize for Health Care Research, Dr. Ahmed Hamed Saif Al Wahaibi, Oman, in Health Promotion 2024 and the Chinese Geriatrics Society, China

About NIMHANS

The Government of Mysore’s Mental Hospital and the Government of India’s All India Institute of Mental Health were combined to form the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), which was founded on December 27, 1974. In 2012, the Institute of National Importance was established, and NIMHANS is now located within the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
