GAIL (India) Ltd., a state-owned company, opened India’s first 10 MW green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, representing an important turning point in the clean energy sector. This development corresponds with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a government project with the goal of building India as a green hydrogen center.
What is green hydrogen, and how is it produced?
Green hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel created by splitting water molecules using renewable electricity through a process called electrolysis. Unlike conventional approaches that use fossil fuels, green hydrogen generation generates no greenhouse gases, making it an environmentally friendly choice for a variety of applications.
GAIL’s Green Hydrogen Plant: Capacity and Applications
GAIL’s 10 MW unit will generate 4.3 tons of hydrogen per day. This high-purity hydrogen (99.99%) will first be used internally at GAIL’s Vijaipur plant, where it will be blended with natural gas to power operations. GAIL plans to deliver the green hydrogen to clients in nearby regions via high-pressure transportation technologies.
Powering the Plant: A Focus on Renewables
To assure the long-term sustainability of its green hydrogen generation, GAIL (India) Ltd. is dedicated to employing renewable energy sources. They are building a 20-megawatt solar power facility in Vijaipur, especially to power the electrolyzers. In addition, GAIL is looking into acquiring renewable energy through open access channels.
