Following an unexpected loss in the state assembly elections, Naveen Patnaik has resigned as the Chief Minister of Odisha, indicating a huge political change. With a significant win, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended the 24-year rule of Patnaik and the long-standing power of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the state.

Election Outcome

With 78 seats in the 147-seat Odisha state assembly, the BJP became victorious. With 51 members, the BJD came in last, while the Congress party came in second with 14 seats. After ruling Odisha for almost thirty years, the BJD is facing a major loss as a result of this election result.

Resignation Details

At the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneshwar, state governor Raghubar Das got a resignation from Naveen Patnaik. With his retirement, Patnaik’s exceptional 24-year term as chief minister comes to an end. During that time, he held the title of second longest-serving chief minister in India, after Pawan Kumar Chamling of Sikkim.

Political Journey

When Naveen Patnaik became victorious in the 1998 Lok Sabha by-election from the Aska seat, his political career officially began. Following the BJD’s victory in the 2000 assembly elections, Patnaik left the Union Cabinet to take on the role of Chief Minister for Odisha. Patnaik and the BJD have had significant political success throughout the years, creating five consecutive terms of leadership in the state.

Lok Sabha Elections

Apart from their victory in state assemblies, the BJP also showed outstanding results in the Lok Sabha elections, securing 20 of the 21 parliamentary seats in Odisha. This double success in the state and national elections highlights the BJP’s increasing power in the area.

With his departure, Odisha politics has come to an end. With the BJD in opposition, the BJP’s win represents a change in the political climate in the state. Politicians and the general public will be carefully observing the results of this election shift as Odisha develops.
