President Murmu Receives Fiji’s Highest Honour in Suva

Ceremonial Reception and Honor

Upon her arrival in Suva, the Fiji Military Force presented President Murmu with a ceremonial guard of honor during her two-day visit to Fiji. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was present at a traditional welcome ceremony held in her honor. She met with President Williame Katonivere one-on-one during her visit to the State House, where she received the highest civilian honor in Fiji—the Companion of the Order of Fiji.

Address to Fijian Parliament

President Murmu highlighted the 75 years of diplomatic ties between India and Fiji in her speech to the Fijian Parliament. She thanked the Fijian government for supporting India’s Aditya L1 Mission and mentioned India’s support for the Vaccine Maitri program during the COVID-19 pandemic. She highlighted the importance of poor countries’ concerns and the Global South’s struggle for climate justice.

Community Interaction and Bilateral Meetings

During his visit, President Murmu had a brief conversation with the Suva Indian community, highlighting the historical and cultural links between the two countries. She visited with Prime Minister Rabuka and President Katonivere, with whom she emphasized their mutual trust while talking about strengthening bilateral ties. Seeing a solarization project at the State House, which is evidence of India and Fiji’s development relationship, was a highlight of the visit.

Broader Diplomatic Tour

President Murmu is now on a three-nation trip, including stops in New Zealand and Timor-Leste, after her visit to Fiji. She will meet with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro in New Zealand from August 7–9. On August 10, the visit will come to an end in Timor-Leste with debates with Prime Minister Kay Rala “Xanana” Gusmao and President Jose Ramos-Horta.

Strategic Importance

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the importance of the Act East Policy in India’s diplomatic strategy is reflected in these state visits, which also show India’s dedication to enhancing bilateral ties. Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar emphasized the value of President Murmu’s visit to improve ties between Fiji and India as well as the significance of the Companion of the Order of Fiji award.
