Every year on June 26th, the world observes the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Its goals are to increase public awareness of the serious effects of drug use and to promote efforts to stop drug abuse and illegal trafficking. The state celebrated the day this year with a number of notable projects and events involving several partners.

Awareness Campaigns and Activities in Naharlagun

The health services directorate and the police department in Naharlagun partnered to arrange an awareness campaign and a drawing competition at Government Higher Secondary School, Nirjuli. Operation Dawn, which included these actions, has already resulted in the filing of 19 NDPS Act charges and the arrest of 44 drug dealers and addicts this year.

Student Participation in Anti-Drug Rallies

In Itanagar and Nirjuli, anti-drug protests were conducted, with over 500 students attending. The subject of the rallies, which were initiated by Capital Itanagar DC Shweta Nagarkoti Mehta, was “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention.” The purpose of the rallies was to draw attention to the pressing need for preventative measures to deal with the intricate problems that drug misuse and illegal trafficking face.

Nukkad Natak Performances to Spread Awareness

NCC students from Mallo Tarin GHSS, Itanagar, performed Nukkad Nataks, or street stories, in Nirjuli’s NERIST Market and Itanagar’s Akashdeep Market in support of the cause. The purpose of these performances was to raise community awareness of the negative impacts of drug abuse.

Educational Programs in Hayuliang and Tawang

The Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Center (DDAC) in Hayuliang hosted an awareness program at Swamy Camp, Government Middle School. In order to avoid drug addiction, the medical officer stressed the need to raise awareness among young people, especially those who are enrolled in school. Various activities were held by educational institutions in the Tawang area to celebrate the day.

The state’s celebration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking showed a concerted effort to inform the public, support a drug-free society, and promote healthy lifestyles. The state showed a significant commitment to tackling and fighting drug misuse through a variety of efforts and community participation.
