The First Double Dual Ascent

At noon on May 21, 2024, Satyadeep Gupta climbed to the peak of Mount Everest, which stands at an impressive 8,848.86 meters. Right after this enormous achievement, he set out to climb Mount Lhotse, which is located at an elevation of around 25,000 feet (7,600 meters) and is connected to Mount Everest by a ridge.

Gupta reached Lhotse in an amazing 11 hours and 15 minutes, having climbed Everest first. On May 22, 2024, at 12:45 am, he had successfully reached the 8,849-meter peak of Mount Lhotse. With this feat, the highest and fourth-highest peaks in the world have been double-ascended in a single season for the first time ever.

Mount Lhotse: An Overview

There are three peaks on Mount Lhotse, which is situated in the Himalayas between the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and Nepal. The highest summit is Lhotse I, which is 27,940 feet (8,516 meters) high. After Mount Everest, K2, and Kanchenjunga, it is the fourth-tallest peak in the world.

The first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest were Swiss climbers Fritz Luchsinger and Ernest Reiss on May 18, 1956, marking the start of the mountain’s rising history.

Celebrating International Sagarmatha Day 2024

On May 29, 2024, Nepal celebrated the 71st International Sagarmatha Day, celebrating the May 29, 1953, climb of Mount Everest by Indo-Nepali Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand. Mountaineers and inhabitants alike have a deep respect for Mount Everest, also known as Sagarmatha in Nepal.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association and the Nepali Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation organized the festival, which highlighted the value of protecting the mountains’ natural beauty. Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda,” the prime minister, stressed the importance of the “Save Mountain, Save Humanity” campaign and called for coordinated action to fight pollution in the Himalayas. The winner of the esteemed Sagarmatha International Award 2024 is climber and tourist leader Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa, an entrepreneur, in honor of his contributions to eco-friendly travel and climbing.

Mount Everest, which is a portion of the Great Himalayas, is called Chomolungma in Tibet, which translates to “Goddess Mother of the World” or “Goddess of the Valley.” It occupies the border between Nepal and Tibet.
