INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MAKHOR

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recognized May 24th as the International Day of the Markhor. This resolution, introduced by Pakistan and eight additional countries, seeks to raise global recognition and promote the safeguarding of this iconic and ecologically essential species.

The Majestic Markhor: A National Treasure of Pakistan

The markhor (Capra falconeri), or “screw-horned goat,” is Pakistan’s national animal. This lovely wild goat is recognized for its amazing spiral-shaped horns, which may reach 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) in length, making it the longest horns of any living caprid species.

From Endangered to Recovering: A Conservation Success Story

Once on the edge of extinction, the Markhor population has made tremendous improvements. Thanks to constant conservation efforts, the markhor population has increased in recent decades, with a notable rise since 2014. Experts think the current Markhor population is between 3,500 and 5,000 people, with the bulk located in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area.

Celebrating Conservation and Looking Forward

The International Day of the Markhor celebrates the ongoing efforts of governments, non-governmental groups (NGOs), and local people that worked for the conservation of this wonderful species. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will manage the commemoration of this day, urging worldwide cooperation in current markhor conservation efforts.

As we celebrate the initial International Day of the Markhor on May 24, 2024, let us renew our commitment to preserve this unique species and its environment. Working together, we can assure a better future for the markhor and the environments it inhabits.
