Manchester City made Premier League history on Sunday, defeating West Ham 3-1 to win their fourth title in a row. The win, which was created by an outstanding performance by Phil Foden, puts Pep Guardiola’s side in a league of their own.
Foden settled any initial jitters at the Etihad with a superb left-footed goal just 79 seconds in. This early goal basically smashed Arsenal’s chances of retaining the title.
Despite asking a win and a City slip-up to win the trophy, Arsenal defeated Everton 2-1, finishing two points behind the other team.
The 23-year-old Foden, who was just named Player of the Season, was key to City’s victory. His first goal quieted the home fans and demonstrated his undoubtedly genius. Only 15 minutes later, Foden raised his lead with a controlled finish after an excellent cross from Jeremy Doku.
West Ham briefly attempted a comeback with Mohammed Kudus’ fantastic overhead kick shortly before halftime. However, City sealed the game shortly after the interval with Rodri’s low strike that slipped past West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
The remaining part of the match was really a formality for City. In the final seconds, they chanted “the Poznań” to celebrate their historic victory. They kept an air of coolness through the game. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s late victory over Everton offered just a hollow consolation.
Guardiola’s Legacy: A Dynasty Established?
This victory is a big achievement for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola. Guardiola has probably created the best squad in Premier League history, and dethroning this juggernaut would be an enormous attempts for any opponent, even Arsenal or perhaps resurgent Liverpool under a new manager.
